You read a lot about diets these days. Some diets promise to help you lose weight while others claim other health benefits like lower cholesterol or blood pressure.
The truth is that as long as you eat healthy most of the time and avoid overeating, your body will get the nutrients it needs to keep you healthy and safe. But are there any foods that can actually help your teeth?
There are. Foods that are rich in calcium can help protect your teeth and give you a healthy smile. Calcium is found in many different kinds of foods, but especially in dairy products like milk and cheese. Young children in particular need to eat the recommended amounts of calcium because their bones and teeth are still developing.
Without calcium, bones and teeth can weaken, growth can be stunted, and the person can be more prone to things like gum disease.
Bad Foods
While there are foods that are good for your teeth, there also are those that can cause harm or increase your chances of dental problems. One of the biggest is foods that are high in sugar.
Sugar can erode the enamel on the outside of your teeth and even corrode the tooth itself, leading to cavities. Worst of all, sugar can sit on the surface of your teeth for hours after you eat it and unless you remove it while brushing, it can continue to eat away at your tooth enamel.
Bella Smile
Other foods are bad for your teeth because they can cause physical damage. Hard candy, for example, not only is high in sugar but also can cause chipping and cracking of the tooth. Sticky foods like caramels can sometimes pull fillings or bridges right out of your mouth.
It’s best to eat healthy foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy and avoid those that can put your pretty smile in danger.
