Most people should get their teeth cleaned at their dentist’s office twice per year. Any less frequently and there is a risk of buildup of plaque and other potential risks that can lead to more serious teeth issues. Getting your teeth cleaned too often also isn’t a great idea because it can put stress on your tooth enamel and lead to other problems.
Twice a year is perfect. In fact, many dental insurance companies will pay for bi-annual teeth cleanings because it promotes healthy teeth and reduces the risk of more serious — and more costly — dental issues down the road.
Teeth Cleaning
Professional teeth cleaning is a more intense process than simply brushing and flossing your teeth. Your dentist or a member of their staff will use dental tools to remove buildup on the surface of your teeth as well as where the tooth meets the gum line. As they clean your teeth, they also will probe and inspect your teeth to look for problems such as cracks, stains, or the beginning of cavities which can then be addressed before they become too severe.
Your dental hygienist also may offer you a fluoride treatment as part of your teeth cleaning. Usually, this is a light gel that is applied to the surface of your teeth to provide strength and protection against substances that can harm and stain your teeth — like sugar, red wine, and cigarette smoke.
